Bitcoin Mining in the Face of Climate Change

Bitcoin Mining in the Face of Climate ChangePanel Speakers: Janet Maingi, David Oren, Sebastien Gouspillou & Julie Landrum (M) From “Bitcoin will burn the oceans” to Greenpeace launching an anti-PoW campaign “Change the Code. Not the Climate”, Bitcoin mining, and its energy expenditure, is often being framed as a net negative when it comes to climate change. Recent findings are painting another picture: the one where Bitcoin might become carbon negative by 2025 through capturing otherwise flared methane gas. This panel shed light on the actual energy usage of Bitcoin, and the energy sources being used, and discussed Bitcoin’s impact on climate change.
