Bhutan quietly built one of the most unusual national Bitcoin strategies in the world. Starting in 2019, the Himalayan kingdom used clean hydropower to mine Bitcoin at low cost and accumulated more than 13,000 BTC while staying largely out of public view. Instead of treating Bitcoin only as a reserve asset, Bhutan has reportedly sold part of its holdings to fund roads, infrastructure, public projects, and broader economic development. That turns state-backed Bitcoin mining into a tool for national financing rather than just speculation. The bigger insight is how a small country used renewable energy, early timing, and long-term conviction to create a strategic asset base that reached a significant share of GDP. Bhutan’s approach stands out as a rare example of sovereign Bitcoin mining
